The Sounds of the Stewartry (SOS)project is fronted by the Stewartry Local Rural Partnership which aims to promote the talent of people within the Stewartry.
At first the project was devised as a means to engage with young people who’s interest were more focused on music as apposed to sport. The necessary funding to launch the project was secured from the Scottish Executive via the Stewartry Area Committee.
The project first set out as a pilot at Castle Douglas High School which commenced at the beginning of February 2006. In order that everyone can get involved in the SOS we arrange a number of ‘Saturday Sessions’ throughout the year for people to come along and receive professional tuition in all aspects of performing and recording their material. These sessions are the main source of live material for Sounds of the Stewartry.
The Lead Officer for the project is Polly Hastings of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Youth Issues Unit, who is supported by Iain Howie, Stewartry Local Rural Partnership Chair. Other partners include: Age Concern, Allan Scott web design, Community Learning and Development, CREATE , Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary, Glenkens Community Arts Trust, South West Sound FM, the Stewartry Drugs Forum, the Wickerman Festival.
The Youth Issues Unit is aims to work in partnership with young people in order to influence and improve services. They want to make a difference to their lives and bring about change. They want to ensure young people feel and are valued – they are encouraged to voice their opinions and these views are listened to and acted upon. We should all remember young people have a right to shape Dumfries and Galloway for the here and now was well as the future.
